At the upcoming UN 2024 Summit of The Future: multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow, September 22-23, 2024, in New York City, the summit’s UN 2030 Agenda will promote AI regulation as part of a plan of action for people, planet, prosperity and peace. At the summit the 2030 Agenda, known as the “Pact for the Future”, will be endorsed by Heads of State and Government, according to the United Nations.
The 2030 Agenda has seven themes, including Global Digital Compact. This initiative was first proposed by the UN Secretary-General in 2018 to ensure that digital technologies respect human rights, promote social inclusion and diversity, and protect the environment. Developing a set of shared principles and best practices for using digital technologies is the goal of the initiative.
The pact also has 17 Sustainable Development Goals and related targets, including “Improve digital cooperation”, which outlines points to protect data, promote regulation of AI, and introduce accountability criteria for discrimination and misleading content.
Regarding promoting the regulation of AI, the US should endorse the pact. Currently the White House Office of Science and Technology is recommending a US Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights as a guide for US companies, educational institutions, communities, and individuals.
The UN’s 2030 Agenda will most likely influence US regulation of AI and could help solidify the Whitehouse Office of Technology’s Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, which will serve only as a recommendation on how to protect individuals and communities from AI threats and cybersecurity threats until the probable future passing of an AI Bill of Rights.
